Maintenance Technician

JOB SUMMARY:

The purpose of this position is to assist in maintaining county buildings at an acceptable level of safety, utility, and attractiveness. This position will perform routine repair and maintenance duties of County-owned building facilities, such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and general contract work. In addition to maintaining buildings, this position may be responsible for grounds maintenance.

 

JOB ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responds to all work requests (including HVAC, electrical, carpentry, mechanical, etc.)
  • Follows the established preventative maintenance schedules for all facilities
  • Performs routine carpentry tasks, such as assisting in construction and repair of partitions, walls, cabinet and furniture
  • Performs plumbing tasks such as assisting with repair of burst pipes and elimination of clogs from toilets, sinks, and drains; repairs or replaces water coolers
  • Performs electrical tasks such as replacing light bulbs, and assisting with repair of electrical circuits and installation of new lines
  • Performs repair and maintenance of heating and air conditioning units
  • Assists in accomplishing general maintenance work for other departments, as needed
  • Assists with ordering parts, supplies and materials for the department
  • Cuts grass and uses weed eater to trim lawns; cleans around area after cutting; performs standard maintenance on lawn equipment
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • General knowledge of facilities maintenance, to include HVAC, electrical systems, plumbing systems, mechanical systems, land carpentry methods and standards
  • Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials and tools of the carpentry trade
  • Knowledge of electrical wiring installation
  • Knowledge of local building codes
  • Knowledge of air conditioning maintenance and repair
  • Knowledge of safe work practices; safe and effective use of equipment and tools
  • Skill in general building maintenance, i.e., plumbing, painting, etc.
  • Skill in operating various saws, plumbing and electrical equipment, and hand and small power tools, etc.
  • Skill in reading blueprints
  • Skill in interpersonal relations; ability to deal with people in a courteous manner
  • Good communication skills; must be able to accept and understand instruction and must be able to effectively work under supervision
  • Must be able to perform strenuous and routine work

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work is performed with employee intermittently sitting, standing, crawling, stooping, bending, crouching, stretching, walking and reaching with the hands and arms
  • Employee must lift both light and heavy objects frequently, climb ladders, and possess a high degree of manual dexterity

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed inside county buildings and outdoors where employee is occasionally exposed to cold, hot, or inclement weather
  • Employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machines with moving parts, vibrating equipment, high-voltage equipment and sharp tools

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • RSES Certification, preferred
  • Some electrical experience preferred
